Macclesfield Heritage Open Day

Sat 14th Sep 2024, 10:30am to 2:30pm

Macclesfield Town Hall is throwing open its doors to welcome in visitors to Macclesfield Heritage Open Day! We’ll be hosting the Made in Macc craft market, a hobby and community-group fair, sharing information about the history of the building and our information booth will let you know about everything else on town-wide as part of Macclesfield Heritage Open Day!

Also open on the day:

King Edward Street Chapel, 11am – 3pm

A chance to visit one of Macclesfield’s oldest and most beautiful buildings dating back to 1690. Members of the community will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the Chapel, its rich history, or its present-day role as a place where people of all backgrounds and beliefs come together in a spirit of tolerance, spiritual curiosity and love. Copies of key historic documents will be available to view and light refreshments will be available (tea, coffee, herbal teas).

Christ Church, 11am – 3pm

Meet the costumed volunteers and learn about the iconic building as it approaches it’s 250th birthday.  Explore local history through the archives plus kids activities, Lego and refreshments.,

St. Paul’s Church, 9:30am – 12:30pm

Come along to St Paul’s as they get ready to celebrate their 180th Birthday in October. Have a look around the church, find out information about the planned refurbishment and roof appeal and help to celebrate their 180th birthday. The Saturday cafe will be open serving FREE full English breakfasts, bacon/sausage butties, cereals and hot drinks.

The Silk Museum, 10am – 4pm

Pop into the Silk Museum to explore The Women’s Line exhibition. The Women’s Line is a snapshot of Macclesfield-resident women’s family trees presenting their female lines artistically through highly personal mixed media portraits and memories.

Additionally you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Wicked Women of Macclesfield exhibition and perhaps take part in the Wicked Women walking tour. This exhibition showcases some of the Wicked Women of Macclesfield whose stories have been in the large part forgotten or invisible. The women of Macclesfield made significant contributions to its industrial and municipal development, leaving great stories to tell. As part of this exhibition you can expect to be introduced to scolds, witches, rebels and more. The Blue Stocking Podcast have researched and produced this exhibition, with support from the New Macclesfield School of Art.

The companion-piece walking tour lasts approx 90 minutes and starts at Macclesfield Town Hall. The tour is free but booking is required – click here to secure your place. Tours set off at 10.00am, 12.00pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

Macclesfield Library, 9am – 1pm

Look up above the door and you’ll still see the ornate date stone of the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank which now houses our amazing Macclesfield Library. Head over to take part in the family Heritage Open Day quiz and trail and be in with a chance of winning a prize!

St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, 10am – 4pm

This grade 2 listed church at the heart of the town centre is mainly Victorian but with some sections, including the Savage Chapel dating back to the 1500’s that makes it the oldest building in Macclesfield still in use today. Step inside to find memorials of mediaeval knights dating back to 1485, links to the battles of Bosworth and Agincourt, and magnificent stained glass.

The building will be open from 10am – 4pm, with the Angel@myTable surplus food cafe open until 3pm for drinks and light meals. This year they hope to have, in addition to their welcoming people, a new smartphone audio trail to try out (bring headphones or earpieces).

Room For Comics, 11am – 3pm

Room for Comics (Macclesfield’s comics and cartoon art studio) will be open from 11am-3pm for you to drop in, and check out their comic shop/studio space, and learn more about just what they do to offer another fantastic creative offering to the town, in their wonderful surroundings.

Situated on on King Edward Street just next door to the Chapel.
