Explore Macclesfield – Writer Wanted for New Visitor Guide

Macclesfield Town Council is creating an inspiring new visitor booklet to celebrate our town’s unique heritage, hidden corners, and beautiful surroundings — and we’re looking for a researcher/writer to bring it to life.

The booklet will be a friendly, story-driven companion for residents and visitors alike — something to read over coffee before heading out to explore. It will highlight Macclesfield’s fascinating history, quirky local stories, points of interest, and walking routes that invite discovery.

What we’re looking for:
A talented writer with a flair for storytelling and a keen eye for accuracy. You’ll research and write engaging content that captures Macclesfield’s character and culture. Our design team will handle the layout, imagery, and print.

Content to include:

  • A short, lively history of Macclesfield

  • Quirky facts and stories – e.g. Why “Treacle Town”? What’s the story behind Waters Green?

  • Highlights of historical and cultural interest

  • 3–4 walking routes/trails, each with short, engaging descriptions

Deliverables:

  • 2,000–2,500 words in Word or text format

  • References or sources for accuracy

  • Optional photo suggestions or image captions

Tone & Style:
Conversational, warm, and place-positive — not overly formal or brochure-like.

Timeline:

  • Research & Writing: 4 weeks

  • Review & Edits: 1 week

  • Final submission: To be confirmed with design team

Budget:
Please include costs for:

  • Research and writing

  • One round of edits

  • Any optional extras (e.g. image sourcing or photography)

📍 Copies of the finished booklet will be available from Macclesfield Library.

Interested?
Send a brief proposal or portfolio and your cost estimate to Laura Smith, Town Clerk [email protected] or drop in to Macclesfield Town Hall.
Closes 5th Jan 2026.
